Student Employee, Level 2, Research Engineer

Job Description

Student Worker, Level 2, Research Engineer (RE) assist SCS RE staff with networking, computing, security, data, and software development associated with pilot NSHE-SCS RE services and funded research projects with faculty, staff, and students from the various NSHE campuses. The Student Employees are given progressively more complex assignments that contribute to the daily operations and services development within RE. RE Student Workers are also available to assist other NSHE-SCS Student Employees with troubleshooting or technology solutions as needed. RE Student Employees are essentially “junior engineers” working under the supervision of more senior personnel and are given dev-ops roles and administrative systems access within the research network environment in order to function effectively as an engineering team member.


Responsibilities:
•    Semester load of at least 6 credits and a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0
•    Dependable availability during our regular business hours (Monday through Friday, 8AM to 5PM), allowing for a total of 20-24 hours of work per week. The schedule is expected to vary each semester according to the student’s coursework, etc, but should be predictable on a weekly basis.
•    Maintain functionality and features of IT infrastructure in a dev-ops workflow with senior personnel, to include configuration/maintenance of hardware/OS for network switches, firewalls, computing servers, data servers, and virtual hosts. 
•    Maintain and develop infrastructure applications within the Research Engineering environment, including virtual machines, DNS, DHCP, IAM services, and systems telemetry databases and dashboards.
•    Update as-built diagrams and hardware labeling.
•    Assist with field research network deployment, configuration, and maintenance.
•    Onboard researchers and research developers into Research Engineering network, virtualized, and data storage environments.
•    Assist researchers and research developers with application setup and troubleshooting.
•    Assist researchers with applications and data workflow development, including computing/analytics and data transfer/management.
•    Investigate and propose novel technology elements to the RE dev-ops team.
•    Attend regional and national workshops or conferences in the higher-education technology services sphere.
•    Encourage and mentor other students and peer employees.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities to perform this job: 
•    Basic understanding of information technology concepts, systems, and functionalities.
•    Basic understanding of TCP/IP networks, technology security, and IT management processes.
•    Basic understanding of operating systems, file systems, and software systems.
•    Understanding of basic project management and team communications.
•    Task management: goals, deliverables, timelines, resources, documentation.
•    Troubleshooting networking/software/applications functionality problems.
•    Note-taking and information organization. 
•    Team communications – Slack, Teams, email, in-person: conveying key information, formulating questions, clarifying discussion.
•    Basic familiarity with software engineering practices including version control, object-oriented design principles, and maintaining an organized, documented codebase.
•    Basic familiarity with operating systems, mainly Linux, including file system structure, virtualization, and command line interfaces.

Compensation: $18.00 – $20.00 per hour depending on experience
